After maaaany long hours, it's finally finished. This is the gown that Elizabeth I wore in the portrait of her as a teenager (the painting is dated 1546, i.e. she was 13). Here is the painting I based the whole gown on: [link]
This is a Tudor gown, sewn about 70-80% by hand (as opposed to machine sewn). I made the entire thing myself, including beading all of the trim. The short necklace and brooch however, were made by Sapphire and Sage ([link]), a wonderful replica jewelry company. All of the funds for materials for this came out of my paychecks, and let me say, it was by no means cheap to make >.<;
I did use a pattern, but it royally sucked, so I ended up altering it a lot. The gown consists of a hoopskirt (that I did not make), a full kirtle (under gown, the gold), and the over gown (red).
NOTE: I finally got some better pictures of the updated costume (front placard was changed and French hood was added). You can view them here: [link] [link] Made and modeled by me.
NEW: You can purchase the updated version of this set here: [link]
I've seen that portrait; I could never tell she was a teenager in it. She's never been an attractive woman, unfortunately. But I do think you did a good job on the dress
Beautiful! I always wonder how they kept them clean in the old days walking in the filthy streets in long skirts? Ive been making huge long pants if you want to look on my fashion gallery ?
No, the bodice and the skirt are connected. I used a Reconstructing History pattern, but it wasn't good at all. I think McCall's has a new pattern out very similar to this, so you might check there.
Yeah, I found one, it is simplicity. It looks like it is modeled after the princess Elizabeth dress. I am gonna get it as soon as it comes to our store! Plus they know have a patter with all the ren underpinnings! yay about time. I just hope they are good!
