I have had such a wonderful time painting this. It has been a great distraction from all the medical turmoil that's been going on. I started it sometime after Christmas and have been painting a little here and there ever since. I always love painting faces (which leaves me to find clever ways of dealing with everything else...like hair, yuck). The designs were also fun to doodle on; it felt like sketching embroidery designs.

My mother loves icons, so I think I've unconsciously picked up on some of the style. I also really like both realism and more illustrationy styles, so I tried to find a nice harmony of them here. For not being terribly religious, I'm quite interested in saints. St. Joan of Arc has always been a personal favorite of mine.

wonderful..I just read the book of her THE MAID and also want to paint her..I feel you captured here a stunning feeling of spirit through her eyes and expression Bravo to you and your talent!!!

I think if you took out the white lines you've draped all over her and focused on making the shading as good as it is on the face, this painting would be on the front page of deviantart in a heartbeat.
